It took a large-scale protest, thousands thrown to prisons, hundreds beaten, and a few dead Belarusians for the world to notice Belarus and the plight of its people. One theater company, Belarus Free Theater, has been trying to attract attention to Europe’s “last dictatorship” for the past 20 years. Its directors were exiled to London, and have been touring the world to much critical acclaim. In Belarus itself, two brave women have been running it. This is their story.
